In the class room segment of the video notice the instruction to "lift your chest up" during the back bend. The purpose of a subtle lifting of your chest will open the ribs allowing the thoracic spine, the upper part of the spine where your ribs are attached, to bend backward a little as well bringing symmetry to the back bend.
